doTERRA Essential Oils are the holistic approach to pet care

Pets (in most cases) are smaller than humans so more sensitive to chemicals

This is mostly about dogs.  There are many cases of oils being contraindicated with cats so I’m not comfortable recommending.

Website – theoilyvet.com is a great resource if you’d like to do your own experimenting with cats. I’ll give you little tid-bits but do your own research.

In order to make your purchase go further, and to dilute the oils, we would use a carrier oil such as Fractionated Coconut Oil.

Horses – minimal to no dilution – 1 – 1 ratio

Dogs by weight

0-25 lbs – 1 -4

26-45 lbs – 1-3

46-75lbs  – 1-2

76-90lbs -1-1

90-150 1 - .5

150 + straight

Cats – 1 – 4

Guidelines for introduction of Esstial Oils

  • gradually introduce
  •  let pet smell them – this is the same thing that I recommend for children. We will gravitate to what we like

Pets should not be take essential oils internally EVER

Always dilute

Topically or aromatically

No pets under 12 weeks old

NEVER eyes, nose, mouth, genitals

Book for reference: Holistic Aromatherapy for animals

A few ways to check quality of your oils before we go into recipes

-should not be greasy!  If they are it’s a carrier in the oil

- latin name AND common name on the label

-Lot # on the bottle – ALWAYS

-price is often an indicator of quality – as with anything else your local stores rarely carry quality oils

Basic oils that you will want in your repitoire

  • lavender
  • peppermint
  • lemon
  • frankincense – super expensive but included in all kits
  • onguard
  • lemongrass
  • digest zen
  • purify
  • terrashield

Most of these come in a kit to save you money. Also… many of these can be used in your own medicine cabinet for care of humans.

Beauty of oils – not just for one thing – compare to Revolution – pay $100 – layer chemicals onto the dog – not useable for anything else.

Purify blend $19 – use it to purify the air, counters, laundry, fleas and tics – so many uses! Or TERRA shield - $10 – use as your own bug repellent topically or in the diffuser as well.

Brings me to the ways to use the oils

For pets:

For us, we can also add internally – NOT for animals

Go through oils and uses:

Lavender – injuries – anti-infectious – gentle, calming oil.

Repels parasites, calms Nervous System, relieves itchiness lemongrass does this as well

Combine with peppermint to increase healing – peppermint is a driver oil or carrier

Infection and pain is decreased with use of peppermint as well

Frankincense – GOOD FOR EVERYTHING –

Wounds, tumours, behavior, infection, bacteria, fungus – dilute with lavender

In humans – cancer cells into apoptosis – focus – migraines, vertigo, wrinkles, skin tags, - list is endless

Peppermint – cooling – Good for hot days after a walk.  Can be used as cooling for horses as well – cools them quickly

Cats – always dilute  4 to one with carrier oil

Purify blend – repels parasites, fleas, tics, mosquitos – especially for dogs and horses – cats 1 drop to 4 carrier oil

Also good in the home as we talked about before – smells SO good!

On guard – used for immune support – oral health – spider bites

Go through human uses as well
